Living the Shingle Life

Asphalt shingles are the roofing material we use more than anything, but a lot of the time our customers aren’t aware that they have options when it comes to their shingles. All of them give quality protection at a cost that won’t break the bank, so let’s go with the main two.

Whether you realize it or not, you’re probably the most familiar with 3-tab shingles since those are the most common. No other material on the market can provide that kind of protection for your home at a cost so low: A single square foot is less than $1. Because they don’t weigh much, the installation goes quicker, too.

What does that mean for you? You’ll save on labor costs and, because 3-tab shingles have a life span of 25 years, when you do finally have to replace them, you’ll pay less in the future for even more savings.

The only real downside to shingles is that the sunlight will eventually cause their color to fade, but is that really worth passing up such a good deal? That’s up to you, but there is a tougher option for a slight increase in price.

If you haven’t heard of architectural shingles, you’re not the only one but it might pay to find out. The price difference between the two is about $5 for every $1 you’d spend on square footage with 3-tab shingles, but you’ll also reap the benefit of fiberglass-reinforced shingles. These last longer and hold up better.

They maintain the lightweight nature of asphalt shingles while needing fewer replacements over time, but it’s entirely up to you. Whatever the case, when you’re ready for the installation don’t hesitate to call to ask us about which one might be better for your home or the colors you’ll have to choose from.

Up on the Rooftop

We’ve been working on roofs long enough now that we can say you won’t find a better cost-efficient material than asphalt shingles. At $1 per square foot, most people spend about $5,000 for their entire roof replacement or $25,000 if they go with architectural shingles. That number does change based on the amount of time and materials used, but it’s still lower than other options.

One thing that we’ve noticed in recent years is that homeowners take it upon themselves to do the installation, thinking they’ll save on labor. Unfortunately, between the time needed to do it, the effort put in, and the materials, it’s really not that different.

Another reason we strongly advise hiring a contractor is because we’ve got the experience and safety equipment to make sure you get the best results. Otherwise, you might end up with your shingles not aligned properly or mismatched.

A Rustic Approach

While we recommend asphalt shingles above anything, wood can give you a specific aesthetic and looks great with certain styles of home. It’s a little more expensive at $7 a square foot, but it’s something to keep in mind.

You might also want to think about your local fire codes, because your wood shingles could need to be treated. Before you worry about getting shingles or shakes, though, just know that they’re pretty much the same thing with a different shape to piece together.

Reflect on Roofing

The first question we always get asked when we mention metal shingles is about the weight, because it sounds like something that would make your roof sag. It’s actually as light as the other shingles because of the elements used to make it, and you’ll pay the same as wood.

However, that’s where the similarities end because metal has a couple of serious benefits to consider. It’s naturally reflective of sunlight, which can keep the heat off your home and possibly affect your air conditioning bill. It’s also got a life span of a century and holds up well, so call us today about your roof repair!
